Florida Window Tint Laws
Know the legal limits before you tint — Tint Pro's keeps you compliant and protected.
Understanding Florida's Window Tint Regulations
Florida law regulates how dark your window tint can be, measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT%) — the percentage of light allowed through the film and glass combined. The higher the VLT%, the lighter the tint.
Tint Pro's of Tampa only installs film that meets or exceeds Florida's legal requirements. Every job comes with a certificate of compliance so you're covered if you're ever pulled over.
What is VLT%?
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light that passes through both the film and the glass. A higher VLT% means lighter tint. Florida law sets minimum VLT% levels to ensure driver visibility and safety.
Legal Tint Limits — Sedans & Coupes
| Window | Legal Limit | Notes |

| Front Side Windows | Must allow more than 28% VLT | Driver & passenger doors |
| Back Side Windows | Must allow more than 15% VLT | Rear passenger doors |
| Rear Window | Must allow more than 15% VLT | Dual side mirrors required if tinted |
Legal Tint Limits — SUVs, Vans & Trucks
| Window | Legal Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint on top 6 inches only | AS-1 line or top 6 inches |
| Front Side Windows | Must allow more than 28% VLT | Driver & passenger doors |
| Back Side Windows | Any darkness allowed | No restriction behind driver |
| Rear Window | Any darkness allowed | Dual side mirrors required if tinted |
Reflectivity Rules
Florida law also limits how reflective your tint can be. Metallic or mirrored tints that reflect more than 25% of light are illegal on both front and back side windows for all vehicle types.
Maximum Reflectivity: 25%
Applies to both front and rear side windows on all vehicle types.
Medical Exemptions
Florida allows darker tint for drivers with certain medical conditions such as lupus, photosensitivity, or other light-sensitive disorders. A signed statement from a licensed physician is required and must be kept in the vehicle at all times.

Penalties for Illegal Tint in Florida
Non-Moving Violation
Illegal window tint is a non-moving violation in Florida, similar to a fix-it ticket.
Fines
Fines typically range from $116 to $166 depending on the county and whether it's a first offense.
Required Removal
You may be required to remove the illegal tint and have your vehicle re-inspected to clear the violation.
Repeat Offenses
Repeat violations can result in higher fines and potential vehicle inspection requirements.
